Smoldering burn barrel sparks brush fire on Fox Island

GIG HARBOR, Wash. -- A smoldering burn barrel sparked a brush fire on Fox Island Tuesday morning, keeping firefighters busy through the day.

Firefighters were called to the area just before 7 a.m. after the homeowner reported the fire near Island Blvd. When they arrived, they found a 200 by 200 foot fire burning down the steep hillside.

Dozens of additional firefighters were summoned to help battle the blaze, which spread to about 5 acres by early Tuesday afternoon. But so far, no homes have been damaged and no one has been hurt.

The homeowner told firefighters he had used a burn barrel Monday night and it was likely not completely extinguished. He says he awoke to the fire Tuesday morning and called 911.

Officials say much of what is burning is poison oak. Residents are advised to keep their windows closed as the air is stagnant.
