CANNON BEACH, Ore. - Police say a 13-year-old girl will survive after she was found seriously injured in the same room of a coastal Oregon resort where her 2-year-old sister was found dead.
The teen is in stable condition after surgery Friday night at Doernbecher Children's Hospital. An autopsy will be conducted Sunday on the 2-year-old girl, Cannon Beach Police Chief Jason Schermerhorn said.
During a press conference Saturday afternoon, Schermerhorn described a horrifying scene in the hotel room.
"I saw a large amount of blood," he said, adding that it all appeared to be from the 12-year-old.
Police have ruled the case a homicide, the first in Cannon Beach in more than 50 years, Schermerhorn said.
Contrary to earlier reports, the child was not cut or stabbed.
Police are still looking for the children's mom, 40-year-old Jessica Smith, who's believed to be driving a gold 2007 Chevy Suburban, license plate APX3141.
Smith is a person of interest in the case, but police haven't labeled her a suspect, Schermerhorn said. He said the children's father, Greg Smith, is not a suspect and has cooperated with the investigation.
Police served a search warrant at the hotel room Friday night, but wouldn't say what they found.
Schermerhorn said police have no idea where Jessica Smith is.
"It's wide open," Schermerhorn said of the case.
