No one was hurt, but a window at the nearby Crossroads Trading Co. store was shattered by gunfire. The store is also managed by the University Book Store.
The university sent out an alert shortly after 2 p.m. informing students and staff members of the incident at 4326 University Way NE.
An employee at the clothing business said she heard gunshots, looked up and saw the damaged window and a man sitting across the street in a car.
The employee said she believes the suspected gunman was upset as he had been refused a refund on an item he had previously purchased at he store. He had made threats against store employees on prior occasions.
An employee at another store located in the 5200 block of University Way made a similar statement to police. He said he heard what sounded like shots, looked up and saw that the store window had been cracked.
The employee said he saw a man sitting in his car across the street, shooting at the businesses. He said the suspected gunman is a customer who had been upset over the handling of his insurance claim.
Police said a black Audi fled from the scene, and officers stopped the vehicle a short time later in the 4300 block of Lake Washington Blvd.
Video from AIR 4 showed a man at the scene of the traffic stop being handcuffed and placed into the back of a patrol car.
The 24-year-old man was booked into the King County Jail for investigation of assault, malicious mischief and felony eluding.
