Sawant to give back 2/3rds of her city councilmember salary

SEATTLE -- Newly elected Seattle city councilmember Kshama Sawant is giving away nearly two-thirds of her annual salary.

Sawant got her first paycheck last week.

She says she only plans to take home $40,000 of her $117,000 annual salary as a show of solidarity to the working class. She says the rest of her salary will go to a fund to help build social justice movements.

Sawant is an advocate for a $15 minimum wage in Seattle, and she says she has already pledged more than $15,000 to two campaigns supporting the increase.
