Several people called 911 just before 7 p.m. to report a fire inside a five-story apartment building in the 400 block of Sherman Street SW.
When fire crews arrived moments later they found smoke and fire coming from a second floor apartment. Other residents were already evacuating the building, and several people told firefighters they believed someone was inside the room that was on fire.
Firefighters entered the room and found a resident dead inside, according to the City of Olympia.
The fire was contained to a single unit and was quickly extinguished. The building, which until 1971 served as St. Peters Hospital, plays home to roughly 100 residents. The complex has a fire alarm system but does not have fire sprinklers, according to fire officials.
Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fire.
