Windell Downs pleaded not guilty to second-degree escape and third-degree assault at Monday's court hearing.
The escape charge stems from a Jan. 31 incident in which Downs fled from police while being transported in shackles from the King County Jail to Bellevue District Court for a court date. Downs reportedly got into a waiting getaway car, and the officer guarding him was unable to pursue because the officer had to stay with the two remaining prisoners.
The third-degree assault charge stems from Downs' recapture and arrest on Feb. 28.
Police say Downs previously was being held on several charges including theft, robbery and organized retail theft. His bail was set at $350,000.
Tanjanique Hills, Downs' girlfriend who was suspected of helping him escape, was arrested on Feb. 19 on her own felony warrant and has since been released after posting bail.
