Police: Woman robbed by man hiding in her car's backseat

TACOMA, Wash. -- Stoking the fears of anyone who compulsively checks the backseat when getting into their cars, a man emerged from hiding in a woman's backseat and robbed her earlier this month in Tacoma, according to the Tacoma Police Department.

According to police, the victim was in the Safeway parking lot at 1624 72nd Street around 9:45 p.m. Feb. 13 when the suspect asked her for a light.

After that exchange, the victim went into the store to do her shopping. Meanwhile, the suspect got into the victim's car and hid in the backseat, according to police.

The victim returned to her car and drove out of the lot, unaware of the suspect hiding behind her.

According to police, the suspect popped up and got into the front seat while the victim was driving on Portland Avenue. The victim started screaming and stopped the car in the middle of the street, and the suspect reportedly ran off with her purse.

Police believe the suspect lives in the area and uses public transportation.
