Police: Tacoma officer runs over man lying in street
TACOMA, Wash. -- A Tacoma police officer ran over a man lying in the street around 1:20 a.m. Saturday according to police.
The officer was patrolling for car prowlers and running license plate numbers on his computer in the 600 block of North Fife Street when he ran over the man lying in the road.
Paramedics transported the 22-year-old victim in critical condition to St. Joseph Medical Center.
Police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said the officer didn't see the man, and was driving "very slowly" at about 10 miles per hour.
The 7-year law enforcement veteran will not be placed on administrative leave, according to Cool, because it was an accident.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, and why the man was in the road remains unclear. Police say more information will be released Monday.
