Police: Meat thief arrested with shopping cart full of steak, ribs

SEATTLE -- Police say they arrested a man walking around South Seattle with a shopping cart full of stolen meat.

An officer was driving down Rainier Avenue late Wednesday night when he noticed something strange: A man in the road pushing a shopping cart full of meat.

His interest piqued, the officer pulled alongside the man to see what was going on.

The 50-year-old man told the officer he was taking the meat -- steak and ribs -- to a friend's house. Police weren't sold on the story and a second officer drove to a nearby QFC to see if he could get to the bottom of it.

QFC workers confirmed the officer's suspicion, saying the suspect had left the store without paying for $263 in meat products.

The man was arrested and booked into King County Jail. QFC had to destroy the meat because it had been removed from the store.
