Watch: Police chase spans several cities, ends with crash in Auburn
AUBURN, Wash. -- A person who led several police officers on a long chase across the South Sound was finally cornered and arrested near Auburn Tuesday afternoon.
The ordeal began around 1:15 p.m. when a Seattle Police officer spotted a man he believed was a suspect in a Sunday shooting outside a motel in North Seattle, according to Sean Whitcomb with Seattle Police.
The officer tried to pull over the vehicle in the 4400 block of 4th Avenue South, but the driver sped off, racing through stop signs and red lights without stopping, Whitcomb said.
During the chase, the SUV was involved in multiple collisions in the Seattle.
The chase weaved south of Seattle into Tukwila, then on to I-5 North, and eventually back around south onto SR-167. The suspect exited the freeway at S. 277th Street in Auburn and headed onto side streets.
Video from King County's Guardian One helicopter showed the driver making several erratic turns as he weaved in and out of traffic on side streets, at times dangerously passing school buses and cutting through business parking lots.
At one point, the chase entered a cul-de-sac at S. 290th Street and 37th Ave. South.
A video provided by a neighbor in the area shows the truck striking a number of police cars as it tried to get free, then speeding off back down the road with obvious damage to the truck.
Photos from the scene showed two minivans parked in the driveways suffered damage during the melee, along with several deep tire tracks in the front yards.
The chase continued until a Seattle Police officer caught up to the truck on a straightaway and conducted a PIT maneuver, spinning the truck into oncoming traffic where it struck another vehicle in the 5700 block of S. 277th Street.
The suspect again tried to drive away as more police vehicles swarmed in and smashed into the truck finally bringing it to a stop. Whitcomb says they did use an "application of force" to subdue their suspect.
The suspect was then arrested and being held for the crimes he committed Tuesday, but detectives said he is not the man wanted in Sunday's motel shooting, Whitcomb said.
Police said the suspect's vehicle ended up being an unreported stolen truck. He was booked into King County Jail for the stolen truck and several hit and run collisions.
Whitcomb said any injuries sustained during the ordeal were minor.
Police say the roads around S. 277th Street at West Valley Highway and Star Lake Road at S. 277th Street up the hill will be closed for much of the evening for the investigation.
Officers from Seattle, Auburn, Tukwila and Federal Way assisted in the chase.
