Pierce County boy, 10, hit and killed by pickup truck

FREDERICKSON, Wash. -- A 10-year-old boy was killed Thursday evening when he was hit by a pickup truck in Pierce County.

Det. Ed Troyer with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department said the boy was leaving a friend's house on his bike just after 6:30 p.m. when he rode into the street and was hit by a truck on 66th Avenue East.

The boy, who was not wearing a helmet, was rushed to Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma but was declared dead on arrival.

A fifth grade student at Naches Trail Elementary School, the boy lived just five blocks from the scene of the accident, Troyer said.

The driver was not impaired and was not speeding and Troyer said it appears the crash was a tragic accident.
