Parents apprehend sex offender allegedly caught taking photos of kids

TUMWATER, Wash. -- Two parents apprehended a registered sex offender who was allegedly following children around and taking pictures of them Thursday at a Wal-Mart and Fred Meyer in Tumwater.

According to the Tumwater Police Department, a mother told Wal-Mart employees 54-year-old Randy Smith was taking pictures of her 6-year-old daughter while they were shopping.

Police were called to the store, and surveillance footage reportedly showed Smith following the girl, as well as other children, around the store and taking pictures with a cellphone.

While investigating at the Wal-Mart, police were then called to the neighborhood Fred Meyer, where two parents had apprehended Smith.

According to police, a father at the Fred Meyer noticed Smith taking pictures of his 6-year-old daughter under the door of a dressing room. Another customer was reportedly informed by his daughter that Smith was taking pictures of her infant son in his stroller.

The two men held Smith until officers could arrive, and he was booked into Thurston County Jail for investigation of voyeurism.

Smith, a Tumwater resident, was found guilty of raping a child in 1990.
