Deputy kills wanted man at Fife motel
FIFE, Wash. -- A Pierce County deputy shot and killed a man wanted on several charges Tuesday after he hit another deputy with a car.
The shooting occurred outside the Motel 6 at 5201 20th St. E. in Fife.
The deputies with the special investigative unit were there to arrest a man and woman who both were the subjects of felony warrants, said Detective Ed Troyer, spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff's Office.
The woman was taken into custody without incident.
But the man, whose car was blocked in by a sheriff's vehicle, pulled his car forward, then rammed the law enforcement car, Troyer said.
Deputies broke out the car's window and used pepper spray on the man. They ordered him to stop, but he backed up and hit a deputy who was on foot, Troyer said.
"He was warned, and he didn't stop, so our deputy shot him, probably saving our deputy's life because he'd already been struck one time," Troyer said.
A deputy started CPR on the man, but he couldn't be revived.
Troyer said the deputy who was hit by the car will be OK.
The dead man was identified as a 36-year-old transient from Tacoma. He has been arrested 31 times and has eight felony convictions on a variety of drug dealing, stolen property, fraud, officials said.
