NW woman hikes 50 waterfalls after separation
PORTLAND, Ore. — When her son was just 3 months old, Alivea Binder and her husband separated.
The break-up was difficult and at times depressing, so she decided to turn things around by going on hikes with her young son. She set a goal of visiting 50 waterfalls by her son's first birthday next month.
Through it all, she says she found a therapeutic way to bond with her son, Rowdy.
"You just get out and unplug from your phone and you don't think about anything except you, and Rowdy, and the trail. You're not caught up in anything. Your mind's clear and you're focused on getting to the waterfall and that destination," she said.
After she hits the 50-waterfall mark, Binder said she'll set her next goal at 100.
