Navy: pilot error caused crash in Eastern Wash. farm field

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Navy officials say pilot error caused a fatal training jet crash in an Eastern Washington farm field. The crash in March 2013 killed all three aviators aboard.

The EA-6B Prowler was based at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in northwest Washington.

The Spokesman-Review reports a detailed review of the crash was released Tuesday by the Navy's Pacific Fleet headquarters in San Diego.

Officials reviewed training records as well as reports from the crew of a Navy jet that accompanied the Prowler.

Among several findings, the review concluded that the flight's instructor had been placed into "unnecessarily accelerated training," and the other two flight officers were not fully prepared for the challenging, low-altitude mission they were flying.
