Man who attacked 70-year-old with skateboard sentenced to 5 years
PORTLAND, Ore. - The man who hit a 70-year-old man with a skateboard in downtown Portland last year was sentenced to five years in prison Tuesday.
Daniel Dorson, 18, appeared in court Tuesday morning. The victim, Larry Allen, was also in court.
Dorson hit Allen over the head with a skateboard outside the Portland Outdoor Store on July 15, 2013. Investigators said the attack happened while Allen was hosing off a sidewalk outside the store. Witnesses told police that a large group of kids attacked Allen and one of them hit him with a skateboard.
Allen needed 15 stitches in his head after the attack. He told the judge he still has breathing problems and has regular visits to a doctor months after the assault.
Dorson refused to apologize to Allen on Tuesday. He told the court he was "defending his own."
Dorson was arrested in Humboldt County, Calif. in October after police released a suspect sketch and offered a reward in the case.
Allen has worked at the store for more than 35 years. He returned to work after he recovered from his injuries.
