Man struck by bus, killed near South Lake Union

SEATTLE - A man was struck and killed by a Sound Transit Express bus Thursday night at Westlake Avenue and Blanchard Street near South Lake Union in Seattle, according to Seattle Police.

Police and medics responded to the scene at about 8:35 p.m. after receiving 911 calls about a bus hitting a pedestrian.

The first responders began attempting first aid on the victim, but they were unsuccessful and the man was declared dead at the scene.

According to Sound Transit, the 43-year-old man walked into the side of the bus about 8:35 p.m. Thursday when he was knocked down and then run over by the back of the bus.

Witnesses told police the bus had been traveling east on Blanchard Street at Westlake Avenue. They said the pedestrian was crossing Westlake Avenue from west to east when the bus turned and struck the pedestrian, said Patrick Michaud of the Seattle police

The bus operator was reportedly unaware of the incident and continued driving, according to Sound Transit. A street car operator witnessed the incident and called 911.

Sound Transit dispatchers were able to contact the driver and had the driver stop the bus, according to Sound Transit.

Officers interviewed the bus driver and a drug recognition expert evaluated the driver but no signs of impairment were found.

The collision blocked northbound and southbound lanes on Westlake Avenue and Blanchard Street on Thursday night, according to the Seattle Department of Transportation.

Seattle Police detectives are investigating and Sound Transit is reportedly fully cooperating. More information will be updated as it becomes available.
