Sgt. Fred Neiman says that as officers were trying to persuade Derral Mosby to surrender Friday, he came out of the house armed with a gun "and confronted SWAT team members." Shots were fired and Mosby was hit. He was declared dead after he was loaded into an ambulance.
No officers were injured.
Neiman says Mosby had recently been the focus of a manhunt involving the U.S. Marshals Service.
Officers tracked the Mossyrock, Wash., man to a relative's Ridgefield home and a standoff began. The Clark County SWAT team and hostage negotiators were called Friday afternoon.
The Oregonian reports that police in Oregon and Washington had been trying to arrest the man for more than a week.
