King County sheriff's Sgt. Cindi West said a resident called 911 just before 7 a.m. to report the man was outside screaming that he was going to "blow something up and burn down houses."
When a deputy arrived at the area in the 4300 block of Preston Fall City Road the man refused the deputy's order to get on the ground.
West said the deputy used a Taser when the man charged, but it did not stop him.
He managed to get a hold of the Taser and lunge at the deputy again, according to a witness. That's when the deputy fired at least one shot, hitting the man.
The man was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he later died. The deputy, who west said has been with the department for more than 20 years, was not injured.
The name of the man who was killed has not been released, but residents in the area said he was homeless and familiar to most people in town.
The incident was the second police shooting in less than 12 hours.
In Tacoma, police shot a man who opened fire at officers after a pursuit on Interstate 5 late Sunday.
No officers were hurt in that shooting, and the suspect was taken to a hospital.
