Man dies after going 'berserk' inside Seattle convenience store

SEATTLE -- Investigators are still trying to figure out what killed a man who reportedly "went berserk" Saturday morning inside a South Park convenience store.

Officers arrived at a store in the 8900 block of 14th Avenue South just before noon after getting calls about a man destroying merchandise and assaulting the store owner.

When they arrived, the 36-year-old man was unresponsive. A citizen and a responding officer performed CPR on the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The store owner told police he used pepper spray to defend himself against the man, who he claimed was going berserk inside the store. But store surveillance video shows the man collapsing just before he was hit with the pepper spray, according to police.

It's unclear what caused the death, but police say it may have been drug induced or caused by some other health issue. The medical examiner is now working to find the exact cause of death.
