Man accused of shooting officer dies after suicide attempt

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - Authorities say the man accused of wounding a Vancouver, Washington, police officer during a traffic stop has died after a suicide attempt in his jail cell.

Clark County Sheriff's Sgt. Fred Neiman said 48-year-old James Sapp died Friday afternoon, almost 24 hours after deputies found him in the act of killing himself and intervened. An autopsy is scheduled.

The Columbian newspaper reports that emergency dispatch logs show a report of a hanging Thursday afternoon at the jail.

Sapp had pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and other charges in the June 30 shooting of Officer Dustin Goudschaal.

The motorcycle traffic officer was shot seven times, but was protected by a ballistic vest. He was hospitalized for a few days and then discharged to complete his recovery at home.
