At roughly 8 p.m., a campus security guard saw a group of young people fighting on a piece of college-owned land across from the main campus.
The guard then heard what he believed to be several gunshots, according to Vickie Sheehan, the college's executive director of college relations.
The group dispersed after the shots rang out, with many of them running onto the campus.
The school is in the middle of finals week, and some evening classes were in session Tuesday night, according to Sheehan.
The school was put on lockdown and students and faculty members received text messages and emails telling them to stay inside.
Auburn police searched the campus but didn't find any of the kids involved in the fight.
The lockdown lasted roughly 15 minutes and the incident was over by 9 p.m.
