Lack of staff forces sun deck closure on new ferry Tokitae

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) - When Washington's newest ferry the Tokitae goes into service Sunday on the Mukilteo-Clinton run, the sun deck will be closed to passengers.

Opening the sun deck would require two more crew members, and the ferry system can't afford them.

A ferries spokeswoman, Broch Bender, told The Daily Herald the sun deck will be opened if more funding arises.

The 20-minute trip between Mukilteo and the south end of Whidbey Island is so short, most passengers remain in their cars.

The Tokitae has room for 144 cars and as many as 1,500 people.
