Kitsap County detectives identify man found buried in 2009

PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- Investigators believe they've finally identified a man who was found buried in South Kitsap nearly five years ago.

Contractors working on a residential housing development in South Kitsap discovered the remains in 2009, and investigators with the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office spent years trying to figure out who he was and how he died.

Deputies now say they are confident that the dead man is Jonatan Luna Rodriguez. They say Rodriguez, who was born in 1990, was living in Washington under the named Moises Luna Rodriguez.

At the time of the finding, all that was known about the deceased was that he was an Hispanic male who was likely in his late teens or early 20s at the time of his death.

Detectives initially classified the case as a homicide.

Investigators recently developed information that the deceased was Rodriguez, and they found members of his family in the Jalisco region of Mexico.

A DNA comparison from family members to that of the recovered remains confirmed the suspicion, according to deputies.

While they now know who he is, detectives are still working to uncover how and why he died. Anyone with information about Rodriguez is asked to call Detective Chad Birkenfeld at (360) 337-5619.
