Kent officer fires shots during arrest of suspected car thieves

KENT, Wash. -- A Kent police officer is on routine leave after firing at a truck driver late Thursday night.

Police say the officer spotted a stolen pickup in an industrial area off East Valley Highway just before midnight. They say the driver of the truck slammed into the officer's cruiser while trying to get away.

That's when the officer opened fire, but no one was hit.

The 32-year-old driver of the truck, as well the male and female passenger were arrested and booked into the King County Jail.

The officer who fired the shots, a 16-year veteran of law enforcement, was struck by the truck during the confrontation and was treated for minor injuries, Kent police said.
