Jefferson PUD employee killed in crash near Discovery Bay
DISCOVERY BAY, Wash. -- A 73-year-old employee with Jefferson PUD was killed in a crash Monday morning.
The call came in reporting the crash just before 11:30 a.m. on Highway 20 near Discovery Bay, said Bill Beezley with East Jefferson Fire & Rescue. When medics arrived, they found the Jefferson PUD truck had crashed into a tree, splitting the tree and knocking the top part of it onto the highway.
Medics and firefighters worked to get the driver free from the wreckage, but he quickly collapsed in cardiac arrest, Beezley said. Medics were able to briefly get a pulse twice, but he died before a medical helicopter could arrive.
The Washington State Patrol identified the victim as Robert Phillips of Chimacum.
Investigators determined the truck was heading east when it drifted off the road to the right, went across a ditch, then into a ravine where it struck the tree.
