Inslee undecided on food labeling measure

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) Gov. Jay Inslee says he hasn't decided how he'll vote on a controversial ballot measure to require genetically engineered foods to be labeled.

Inslee tells KPLU that the scientific literature shows no noticeable negative health effects with GE foods. But he realizes many voters want to have that information so he says he needs to consider Initiative 522 some more.

The Yes on 522 campaign has so far raised $5.1 million. It got a $250,000 boost from the Washington D.C.,-based Center for Food Safety Action Fund last Friday.

Opponents have raised $17.1 million, largely from a food industry trade group and five large corporations.

Supporters say consumers have a right to know whether foods they buy contain GE ingredients. Opponents say it would cost farmers and food processors, and raise prices on consumers.
