Gregoire expresses sympathy for shooting victims

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - Gov. Chris Gregoire expressed her "profound sorrow and grief" over the fatal shootings at a Connecticut elementary school.

In a statement issued Friday, Gregoire said that her prayers were with the community of Newtown, Conn., where a man opened fire inside two classrooms at the elementary school where his mother was a teacher, killing 26 people, including 20 children. The 20-year-old killer, carrying two handguns, committed suicide at the school, and another person was found dead at a second scene, bringing the toll to 28, authorities said.

Gregoire called it a "heartless act of violence" that was incomprehensible, and said that all Washingtonians stood with her "in expressing our profound sorrow and grief."

Gregoire also directed that flags at state facilities be lowered to half-staff until all next Tuesday in accordance with President Barack Obama's proclamation.
