Fugitive child rapist with Wash. state ties arrested in Va.

DENVER - Authorities have found and arrested a fugitive sex offender with Washington state ties who cut off his GPS monitor and disappeared from Denver one week ago, according to media reports from Colorado.

Eric Eugene Hartwell, 51, was taken into custody Friday morning in Norfolk, Va. U.S. Marshals tell Denver's 7NEWS they found him in a motel where Hartwell refused to open the door.

The marshals broke down the door to take him into custody.

The 51-year-old cut off his monitoring bracelet and walked away from a Denver halfway house last Friday.

He has previous arrests in Washington for child rape in 1991 in Snohomish County and attempting to sexually assault a hitchhiker in 1996 in Skagit County. He also cut off a GPS bracelet in 2009 in Washington.

According to an earlier report, he had been thought to be in Cheney, Wash.
