Fleeing suspect jumps into Bellingham Bay, gets arrested anyway

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - A fleeing suspect was plucked from Bellingham Bay by a U.S. Coast Guard boat after he jumped into the water to get away from law enforcement officials attempting to arrest him for trespassing, police said.

Bellingham police said the man jumped into the Whatcom Creek waterway near West Chestnut Street and C Street in an attempt to elude officers and began swimming toward Bellingham Bay.

Officers requested an assist from the Coast Guard and the suspect was safely pulled from the water. He was cold but uninjured, police said.

After a quick trip to the local hospital to be checked out, he was booked into Whatcom County jail for investigation of trespass, obstructing and resisting arrest.
