Fire damages 2 houses in Everett neighborhood

EVERETT, Wash. - A two-alarm fire spread from one house to another in an Everett neighborhood on Friday as crews fought to keep the flames from igniting even more homes.

Firefighters responded to the scene, on 23rd Street between Broadway Avenue and Lombard Avenue, at about noon after receiving reports of a house fire, said Rick Robinson of the Everett Fire Department.

Fire officials says flames spread from the roof of one home to the neighboring roof, and the arriving battalion chief called in a second alarm to stop the flames from spreading even farther.

Residents of one house escaped and firefighters believe the other one was vacant because it's in foreclosure.

The fire department says stubborn fires in the attics of both houses were hard to extinguish.

Both homes have been declared a total loss with damage estimated at $350,000.
