Firefighters responded to the scene, Gildo Rey Elementary School at 1005 37th Street SE in Auburn, at about 7:55 a.m. after receiving an automatic fire alarm.
Arriving personnel found smoke showing in an non-sprinklered area in the north wing of the school. The first crew to arrive made a quick initial attack to keep the fire from spreading, and damage was limited to a single classroom.
Due to the fire, robo-calls went out to parents of students saying that school would be closed for the day. But school officials later decided to hold classes after all due to the limited nature of the damage, and buses were dispatched to pick up children after a second round of phone calls.
Students are being directed to the school gym as they arrive.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
