Fire crews attack new central Washington wildfire

CASHMERE, Wash. (AP) - State, federal and local firefighters are attacking a new wildfire burning in a central Washington canyon north of Cashmere.

Central Washington Interagency Communications Center spokesman Jim Duck says the fire in Hay Canyon quickly raced across about 50 steep acres of grass, brush and light timber after starting late Wednesday afternoon. He said Wednesday evening he wasn't aware of any homes that were threatened.

Four helicopters were fighting the fire, along with three 20-person hand crews and numerous engines from the state Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Forest Service and a local fire district.

There's no containment yet and no word on the cause of the fire.
