Few surprises in Washington primary election

SEATTLE -- There were few surprises Tuesday night as incumbents cruised through Washington's primary election.

Republican U.S. Rep. Dave Reichert advanced through the 8th District Congressional primary and will appear on the November ballot, as will democrat representative Rick Larsen, Adam Smith and Denny Heck.

Democrat Suzan DelBene, a freshman representative and former Microsoft executive, easily advanced to the general election in the 1st District Congressional primary.

Washington's 1st Congressional District was drawn up during the latest redistricting process to be a tossup for Republicans and Democrats. It stretches from eastern King County areas such as the wealthy enclave of Medina all the way to the northern border.

Larsen moves to the November ballot along with Republican B.J. Guillot, who was leading other contenders for second place in Tuesday's primary.

The 2nd District spans the northern part of western Washington from north King County to just north of Bellingham, and includes the San Juan Islands. Larsen has represented the district since 2001.
