Prosecutors say 19-year-old Lenny Brikn and his brother, Deshawn Boykin, planned to rob a drug dealer last August at their Federal Way apartment, but the situation got out of hand.
David Ross, a 35-year-old Renton man, showed up at Brikn's apartment August 1 to sell marijuana to Brikn and Boykin, according to prosecutors. When Ross and his partner got inside the apartment, prosecutors say Brikn and Boykin pulled out handguns and attempted to rob the men of their drugs and money.
After the robbery, the brothers took off running. What they didn't know was that Ross was also armed with a handgun, and he opened fire on the men as they ran away. Boykin was hit twice and later died of his wounds.
Ross and Briken were both arrested later.
Ross, who already had two felony drug convictions prior to the shooting, is now charged with conspiracy to distribute marijuana, unlawful possession of a firearm and discharging a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, according to prosecutors. His trial is set to begin in June.
Brikn pleaded guilty Thursday to drug trafficking and using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of seven years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for August 1.
