Falling tree kills ATV rider in ice storm

MIRRORMONT, Wash. - One person has been killed in the epic winter storm that crippled Western Washington with snow and ice.

King County sheriff's officials said a man in his 60s was killed by a falling tree as he prepared to take a ride through the snow on his all-terrain vehicle.

Sgt. Cindi West of the King County Shieriff's Office says the man was backing the ATV out of a shed in the 15300 block of 231st Avenue SE in Mirrormont on Thursday morning when the tree fell on him. The ATV rider died at the scene.

Officials said it appeared the weight of ice and snow on the tree caused it to come down.

It is the first fatality of the storm in Western Washington, officials said.

Gov. Chris Gregoire has declared a state of emergency because of the freezing rain causing treacherous travel, power outages and threats that buildings could collapse.
