Employee charged with trying to lure 9-year-old girl at fair
GRAHAM, Wash. -- An employee at the Pierce County Fair tried to lure a 9-year-old girl away from the horse barns Sunday but was stopped by the victim's older sister, according to charges filed in Pierce County Superior Court.
According to the charging documents, the victim, a 4H member, was working at one of the fair's horse barns when 50-year-old Bryan McCann, who is employed by Funtastic Carnival, entered and started talking to her.
The victim's 16-year-old sister, who was also working in the barn, later told Pierce County Sheriff's Office deputies she saw McCann get very close to the victim, ask her to leave with him and then motion for her to come with him.
A woman working at the fair had been following McCann after hearing reports of a man being rude and cursing. She told deputies McCann offered the victim his hand, and the victim shook her head and looked at the ground.
In an interview two days later, the victim told law enforcement McCann had asked her to go on some rides with him. She said she was scared.
According to the charging documents, the victim's sister intervened, telling McCann, "Absolutely not, sir." McCann then reportedly stormed off.
The witness and the victim's mother followed McCann until they could alert a security guard. McCann was detained and the Sheriff's Office was called.
According to the charging documents, McCann told deputies he is from Nevada and only came to Washington to work at the fair. He said he was just walking around the grounds until his shift started later that evening.
McCann denied trying to lure the victim, according to the report. Following his arrest, he reportedly made derogatory comments about the victim's mother and claimed to be both homicidal and suicidal.
Prior to the incident, a 15-year-old working at a different horse barn reported seeing McCann talking to a sixth-grade girl and a 5-year-old working inside the barn. The teen said McCann asked the children for their names and what time they were going to be finishing work and leaving the barn.
McCann has been charged with luring and attempted kidnapping.
Ed. Note: This article stated McCann was an employee of the Pierce County Fair. He is actually an employee of Funtastic Carnival working the fair.
