Child injured on escalator at University Street Light Rail Station

SEATTLE - A small child was injured in an accident on an escalator at the University Street light rail station in Seattle Friday night.

It happened just after 7:00 p.m. on an escalator headed down towards the light rail trains.

King County Metro Transit officials said the child fell at the bottom of the escalator and suffered a major injury to their hand and had to be taken to the hospital.

No word on the extent of the child's injuries.

Metro said the escalator was in proper working condition and there is no indication in was malfunctioning.

“Safety is our top priority. This was an unfortunate incident. Our thoughts are with the child and the family," said Jeff Switzer with Metro Transit.

The escalator has been taken out of service until the investigation into the accident is complete. The University Street Station remains open.

In 2013, a 42-year-old man died on an escalator in the same light rail station after he fell and was strangled by his shirt.
