Charge: Former undercover deputy stole $52,000 in drugs

SEATTLE -- A former undercover detective with the King County Sheriff's Office is now in the King County Jail, accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of drugs.

Prosecutors have charged Mitchell Wright with first degree theft and drug-related charges.

According to investigators, Wright resigned in July after police caught his girlfriend using heroin in his car. Officers then found more drugs, taken from the DEA, inside his police cruiser, prosecutors said.

In all, investigators say they believe Wright stole up to $52,000 worth of narcotics, including oxycodone.

Prosecutors successfully argued for Wright to be held on $250,000 bail, citing Wright could still have access to copies of his undercover identification documents and could use them to leave the country. Prosecutors say they also intend to seek a greater sentence than the standard 0-6 months in jail because they allege Wright used his position as a deputy to commit the crimes.

Wright's next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 4.
