Car hits boy on Blaine pier, plunges into water

BLAINE, Wash. (AP) - Divers are searching for a vehicle that crashed through a gate onto a pier at Blaine, hit a boy and plunged into the water.

North Whatcom Fire and Rescue Chief Ron Anderson tells The Bellingham Herald a man and his two sons were on the dock Sunday evening when the vehicle hit the 7-year-old boy. He was treated at St. Joseph Hospital for a leg injury.

The car sank in Drayton Harbor where the water is about 60 feet deep. No one surfaced. Divers searched until midnight and called off the effort until daylight Monday.

Police spokeswoman Lisa Moeller says witnesses described seeing the car go straight off the end of the pier and said it appeared intentional.
