Tacoma firefighters responded to the area near North Levee Road and 70th Avenue East on Saturday morning after receiving a report of a body snagged on a log near some bushes in the river.
A fire crew then spotted the body, and a boat was brought in to recover it.
A Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman says the body appears to be that of Josh McNamara, 29, of Buckley, who was last seen July 8 swimming alongside an inner tube in the river near Orting when he was swept away.
Search teams spent two or three days searching the river for him after he disappeared, and his friends also have continued looking for him. But no trace was ever found until Saturday morning's sighting.
McNamara's mother, Shirley, earlier posted flyers with his photo near the spot where he went missing. She said Josh was not wearing a life jacket at the time of his disappearance.
The Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office has not yet officially identified the body.
