Blaine voters to decide on changing city name

BLAINE, Wash. (AP) - Voters in Blaine will decide this fall whether to change the city's name to Blaine Harbor.

A divided Blaine City Council voted Monday to put the name-change measure on the Nov. 4 ballot.

Supporters say changing the name would attract visitors from Canada to the city, which actually sits on a body of water called Drayton Harbor, by the U.S.-Canadian border about 110 miles north of Seattle.

Opponents say it won't draw visitors or help economic development.

The Bellingham Herald reports that voters defeated a similar name-change measure in 2000.
