Kelsy Hachtel had gone to bed with her mother, and the mom told detectives she woke up just before 1 a.m. to find Kelsy wasn't breathing, according to Sgt. Ray Brady of the Thurston County Sheriff's office.
Medics rushed to the home in the 7700 block of 3rd Ave SE and took Kelsy to St. Peters Hospital in Olympia, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators indicated Tuesday the death was suspicious because of possible prior injuries and bruising on the child that has not been reported, Brady said. An autopsy conducted Wednesday showed Kelsy had been assaulted and died of multiple internal injuries due to blunt force abdominal trauma, Thurston County coroner Gary Warnock said. Brady said the lethal injuries occurred within a few days of Kelsy's death.
Brady says they are still interviewing all who had contact with the girl and no arrests have been made yet.
Investigators say two families live inside the home together with a total of seven children. As for the 2-year-old, detectives say Child Protective Services have an open a file on her, but won't say why.
Neighbors told KOMO News the mother and her daughter just moved there recently.
