The incident began at about 2:20 a.m. when officers responded to 911 calls about a disturbance at a home in the 1700 block of South Pearl Street, said Detective Jeff Kappel of the Seattle police.
Two men met officers outside the residence and said that the 23-year-old suspect, who was still inside, had threatened them while brandishing a machete. The two men, a roomate of the suspect's and a visiting friend, were not injured.
Patrol officers made several attempts to get the suspect to come outside by calling him on his cell phone and speaking to him over their patrol car's public address system. But the suspect refused to come out and surrender to police, Kappel said.
A SWAT team was called in and surrounded the residence. Negotiators eventually were able to get the suspect to surrender, and he was placed under arrest.
South Pearl Street was closed east of 17th Avenue South during the incident.
