Armed robbery suspect arrested after brief standoff in Federal Way

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Federal Way officers have arrested an armed robbery suspect who had been holed up inside an apartment building Tuesday evening, Federal Way police said.

Detectives received a tip that their suspect was at the Villa Capri apartments on S. 286th Street Tuesday afternoon, said Cathy Schrock with Federal Way police. Officers and SWAT team members were then called to the building around 3:30 p.m., and nearby residents of the fourplex were evacuated.

No one has been hurt.

The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Stephen Rodrigue, is wanted for multiple counts of armed robbery and theft for crimes committed over the past several months near that apartment complex, including at the nearby 7-Eleven and Safeway stores, Schrock said. During the robberies, the man has been armed with a gun or knife and has used pepper spray and physical force.

Rodrigue is also a convicted sex offender and has a felony escape warrant for investigation of third degree rape.
