Matthew Boitano pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide in connection with the 2011 crash that killed Suzy Armstrong.
Prosecutors say the then 16-year-old was speeding and illegally passing another car when he crashed head-on into Armstrong's Subaru, killing her. Boitano was not injured.
After the crash, Boitano told police he passed "a dude" who was going too slow and then "hit the lady," according to court documents.
Armstrong's husband spoke at Boitano's sentencing.
"This shouldn't be a homicide trial. You murdered my wife. You, your guardians, as far as I'm concerned, you all should be charged," said Gene Armstrong.
In addition to his time in jail, Boitano will spend 12 months in community custody and pay restitution to Armstrong's family.
