City spokeswoman Kristin Banfield said officers were dispatched to a residence in the 6800 block of 188th Street NE just before 3 p.m. Tuesday for reports of an assault with a weapon.
When they arrived, police discovered a 26-year-old Arlington woman with a gunshot wound to the head and requested immediate medical aid from the Arlington Fire Department. The woman was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center.
Just before 3 a.m. Wednesday, investigators were informed that the victim had died from injuries sustained in the shooting.
Wednesday night, the woman's aunt and uncle Pam and Darryl Spencer said her name was Jessica Jones.
"I just don't want her to be forgotten," Pam Spencer said holding back tears in front of the home where Jones was shot.
The Spencers said Jones struggled with substance abuse problems, but was turning her life around and trying to be a better mother for her seven year old son. Now the family wants to try to follow every lead but aren't sure who was behind the killing.
"Whoever did this, you didn't have to do this, man. You didn't have to do this," Darryl Spencer said.
