Apartment fire sparks dangerous brush fire in Renton
Firefighters raced to Falcon Ridge neighborhood around 2 p.m. when a 4-alarm apartment fire destroyed and damaged several buildings near South 18th Street and Grant Avenue South.
Residents used fire extinguishers to help put out flames after the fire jumped Grant Avenue South and started to burn nearby brush and trees.
An emergency evacuation was ordered by police who drove along Northeast 19th Place and used a loud speaker to alert residents. Fire officials said it would be prudent for those living in Falcon Ridge to evacuate their homes.
As the fire crawled through the brush, it threatened more homes in the Rolling Hills neighborhood of Renton.
One man who lives in Rolling Hills said flames reached within 30 feet of his fence.
By Saturday evening, two additional strike teams from Eastside and Pierce County were deployed to help contain the brush fire.
No injuries were reported, Captain Kyle Ohashi of the Kent Fire Department said.
