Animals evacuated after water main break floods pet store

TUKWILA, Wash. - Several animals had to be rescued from a Tukwila pet store overnight after it flooded, and a second water main break developed Tuesday morning across the street, emergency officials said.

Firefighters at the scene say they're not sure if the two leaks are connected.

Crews responded to the first flooding indicent, in the PetSmart store at 17585 Southcenter Parkway in Tukwila, at about 8:30 p.m. Monday after a water main broke beneath the building.

It spewed water all over and forced animal evacuations. One bird got out of its cage and had to be captured with a coat. All of the animals were taken to other PetSmart locations around Puget Sound.

The water was shut off by 9:30 p.m.

Workers used squeegees to clear water out of the building and water utility workers will come to fix the water main break Tuesday morning.
