21 year old drowns during Snohomish River party

SNOHOMISH, Wash. - The Snohomish Sheriff's office says a 21-year-old man drowned while attempting to reach a sandbar drinking party on the Snohomish River.

The sheriff's office says Derek Harrison was in a canoe with other people ferrying them to the sandbar where the group was drinking around midnight Saturday.

The canoe took on water, spilling three people into a section of fast-moving water near the Bob Herman Wildlife Park. Deputies responded around 12:30 Sunday to a report of a drowning.

Harrison's body was found downstream of the sandbar by search and rescue teams Sunday afternoon.

Harrison was a talented basketball player and youth couch with a promising career at his grandfather's car dealership, family members said.

The office says Harrison was reportedly intoxicated during the accident and that no one on the canoe was wearing a floatation device.
